Solitude

“Your inner soul, my friend, is surrounded with solitude and seclusion. Were it not for this solitude and this seclusion you would not be YOU and I would not be I. If it were not for that solitude and seclusion, I would, if I heard your voice, think myself to be speaking; yet, if I saw. If it were not for that solitude and seclusion, I would, if I heard your voice, think myself to be speaking; yet, if I saw your face, I would imagine that: I were looling into a mirror.”

Kahlil Gibran

D. W. Winnicott defines the capacity to be alone as one of the most important signs of maturity in emotional development. The foundation of this capacity depends on the existence of a good object in the psychic reality of the individual.

Solitude is subjectively experienced as an undeniable part of our existence, however during this long haul under the shadow of the pandemic, we all have experienced its various forms, on an objective and a universal scale. Passing through the destructiveness of solitude in immeasurable pain, we have learned to lean back on creativity and productivity with the freedom that comes together with being alone. While the solitude during this period has paved the way for integration and maturation for some of us, it has turned into solitary confinement or emptiness and pointlessness for others. Just like the flow of our lives, our psychoanalytic work had to be reshaped within this solitude. Accustomed to listening to the solitude within solitude, as psychoanalysts, we have begun to hear the sounds of silence and solitude with a different ear.

As Oruç Aruoba said “Solitude requires practice.” We are inviting you to our online symposium Psychoanalytic Views 15 on December 11-12, 2021 to share our solitary practices during the social isolation and to think about them together psychoanalytically.
